Molly Meldrum makes steady steps on the road to recovery

MUSIC guru Molly Meldrum has been reunited with his beloved pooch, Ziggy, as he continues to make a steady recovery from injuries sustained in a life threatening fall in the lead-up to Christmas.

Meldrum released a picture of himself with Ziggy yesterday, the first time he has been photographed since he suffered a skull fracture, bruising and swelling to his brain, a broken collarbone, shattered shoulder blade, fractured vertebrae and broken ribs when he fell while putting up Christmas decorations at his Richmond home.

He has also suffered post-traumatic amnesia.

"Although I am not ready yet, I can't wait to go home to look after Ziggy, to see my friends, and to properly thank them, my family and the hundreds of people who sent their best wishes and love to me," Meldrum said in a statement.

"Believe it or not while I can’t say I like being hospital, I know I have been very well supported, and I have enjoyed meeting other patients and their families. We all have a fair bit of rehab ahead of us and we encourage each other in the exercise programs.

"I have missed everybody, missed my work, missed having access to a phone and my laptop - but I know I can re-introduce these things gradually as I get better."

The much-loved music identity also expressed his support for his pal, Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

"I even received a card from Julia Gillard, so I wish her all the best," he said.

"I hope she's having a better time than I am."

Meldrum fell from a ladder at his home in December and spent four weeks in the intensive care unit at the Alfred Hospital.

He has spent the past four weeks at the Epworth's Post Traumatic Amnesia Unit in Richmond, where his rehabilitation continues.

Messages of support flooded in from around the world from some of the biggest names in music including Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Russell Crowe, Michael Buble, Cher, and Boy George following his dreadful fall.

"I have been incredibly well-looked after at both the Alfred and Epworth hospitals. The staff have been tremendous and I am very grateful," Meldrum said.

Cheeky Molly Meldrum on the mend says his right-hand woman Yael Cohn

Kathy McCabe
The Daily Telegraph
11 February 2012

MOLLY Meldrum is finally showing encouraging signs of "the cheeky person that he is" - according to the woman who has spent every day by his bedside since his life-threatening fall.

With his brother Brian, Meldrum's long-time right-hand woman Yael Cohn has remained a steadfast supporter of the music guru as his "scrambled" brain recovers from the traumatic injuries he suffered after falling 3m at his Melbourne home in December.

"The idea is to keep him as peaceful as possible a while - it's a bit like his brains rewiring, it's been scrambled and it has to rewire itself," Ms Cohn said.

Now undergoing rehabilitation after five weeks in hospital, Meldrum's mannerisms and sense of humour have come back and Ms Cohn said "he's the same person to me now".

The highly respected producer was the woman who called the ambulance when her boss fell as he tried to hang Christmas decorations for his annual party.

Ms Cohn said the much-loved television presenter had made small improvements every day.

"I feel really positive that he will be well again," she told Seven's Sunday program.

"I see the cheeky person that he is slowly coming back and he'll definitely be back to tell us all what to do soon. He's not taken one step backwards at all so that's a huge thing for us.

"As long as we see improvement every day, we're happy,

"He's the same person to me now - the same mannerisms, the same characteristics, the same sense of humour, the same thoughts. It's just a little bit scrambled, so yeah, he's the same person already."

In her interview with Chris Bath, Ms Cohn stressed that Meldrum would want all his friends to remain positive as he still had a long way to go in his recovery.

"He wants people to be happy and he would never want anyone to be sad over him because he's actually got so much to live for and he's such a lucky man because he's still in this world," Ms Cohn said.

Hang in there Molly, keep your chin and spirits up, we're with you all the way. You are not alone as we continue to pray and support your eventual recovery. Smiling

Yes, I heard that Jax, it will be a very long process but the signs are pointing in only one direction and that's upwards for Molly. He's chatting and communicating although a little incoherently but nevertheless the basic signs of communication is a sure relief that there is no sustanance to the head.

Good news Smiling ...... Molly will be leaving hospital in a few days,

he will be entering a private rehabilitation clinic.

The road to recovery is going to be long and difficult,

wishing you all the best Molly ♥

Even more fantastic news, just in time for Christmas

Molly Meldrum responding to basic commands

MOLLY Meldrum is awake again and showing signs of recovery from a head injury received in a recent fall.

His manager Mark Klemens said that Meldrum has come out of sedation in hospital and is responding to basic commands.

Although the music guru remains in a serious but stable condition his latest small step forward has cheered his supporters on Christmas Day.

The 65-year-old fractured his skull in a fall three metres down stairs at his Richmond home while he was putting up Christmas decorations 10 days ago.

Doctors at The Alfred hospital have taken Meldrum off the ventilator and he is now responding to "very very basic commands'', Mr Klemens said.

"Certainly he's not in a position to hold a conversation, or anything like that,'' he said.

"He's a bit sore and a bit uncomfortable but it's all a positive step and a great Christmas present for the family.''

Even more wonderful news http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/sydney-nsw/molly-meldrum-on-the-me... He has undergone surgery for his ribs and collarbone, that is a sign that he is continuing to stabilise each day.

God bless you, thinking of you Molly and do yourself a favour, please get well soon, xoxoxox #LoveYouMolly#

Molly's condition has been downgraded from critical to serious but stable condition, and the level of sedation has decreased following his amazing response yesterday, especially opening his eye albeit briefly. That is indeed fantastic news all round, and may the prayers continue for Molly's recovery.

I hope and pray MOLLY will make it through ok. He is so well loved here in Aussie land and also by lots of artisits overseas. And he was the only person Michael would let interview him whilst he was in Australia. Why are all these bad things happening to well known people?? its just so sad Sad :( Please pull through MOLLY, we are all praying for you ♥

Yeah, I heard this last night and it really breaks my heart. Sad Despite interviewing numerous music artists past and present, to me Molly's interviews with Michael will always stand out like a sore thumb with wonderful but reflective yet sad memories. Sad

#LoveYouMolly. Sad Do yourself a favour (as you often say), get well soon. We are praying for a complete but miraculous recovery. xoxoxo
