Bad better than Thriller??

Hey everyone,
I was just surfing the net earlier and i came across Rolling Stone Magazines review of Bad and it said:-

'Comparisons with Thriller are unimportant, except this one: even without a milestone recording like "Billie Jean," Bad is a better record. The filler – "Speed Demon," "Dirty Diana," arguably "Liberian Girl" – is Michael's filler, which makes it richer, sexier, better than Thriller's forgettables: "Baby Be Mine," "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)," "Lady in My Life." '
(I took that from the Rolling Stone Magazine official website)

I wanted to what you guys think of that? I just want to here other peoples opinions on it.

Thanks Laughing out loud

all the songs are very good and none is better than the other
Eye-wink

I agree. But I really prefer bad album, but I really like Billie Jean Thriller album which the song.

I have to agree. but then again.. my observation shows that it really depends on which demographic you are from. For me Bad is very diverse. Its strong all round.. songs like Bad, Smooth Criminal, TWYMF, Liberian Girl, Dirty Diana, Man in the Mirror. Each single is strong on its own.

But as an album, I would say Thriller is a lot more solid as a whole. But of course OFF THE WALL is impeccable solid. But Bad is more revealing of MJ's personality and style. It seems like he has more control over his creative direction. Whether this is better or not.. that's subjective. The problem with albums that become more a reflection of your character than just a album that showcases your craft, is that criticism becomes personal too. It really depends on whether people like you or not. It's more a show off album. Look at my range kind of thing. Bad was MJ's annus mirablis. A real solid showcase of MJ and the gift he has. Moonwalker, the concerts, the styling, the marketing and then the album. Its just dizzying I really don't know how one person can come up with the entire thing. But he did.

If a nobody released Bad, it would be still be considered genius.. meaning that Bad just confirms MJ's position as musical genius. But if it had more discipline.. I would say in terms of musical arrangement and production.. then maybe, Bad would be ridiculous.. a classic.

For me the whole thing with MJ subsequently is discipline and people. If there was a producer who could match MJ's genius. If he surrounded himself with people who understand music, more than the music business. Real solid geniuses. None of whom are going to be yes man, so bedazzled by MJ... someone like Q without the baggage that Q and MJ obviously have w each other. Then maybe MJ would be like this unstoppable juggernaut. It would be less about him, and more about the music. I imagine MJ to be hard to work with. People will be intimidated by him and his achievements and the fact that he is a fussy genius. I don't think he ever managed to get out of the whole MJ phenomenon.. and personally I feel that the impact on his consequent music can be felt.

So it's a wonder that Bad ever got released and that Q stuck with MJ for this one.

I don't think MJ would like to have been told this. But that is the fact. He is like Mozart on the loose and I'm sure he has a lot more he could give. I have no doubt about that. But sometimes as I said, when it comes to his music, people are more interested in the music aspect of it, than the him aspect of it.

And that's why if you like MJ you would love Bad to death. But if you don't care for MJ. You'd say this album has lots of super singles. But the cohesion and the musical direction can be a bit more solid. I feel the potential for it.. I really do, it sizzles and cracks.. But I don't see the boom. It's a very self-indulgent album... people usually don't favour that.

Thriller on the other hand, is not so much about the singles.. there are some stellar singles there. But together you get a solid whole. It charted the direction for the entire music business. I don't think anyone will dare come up with an album with a similar direction.. it is just too experimental.. and I believe only MJ could have done that because he already has critical success, he was really young 24 only and he was already a very very very successful veteran in the music industry. So it's not like his life depended on the success of Thriller. He had the right to have that musical ambition.. because his position is recognized. And it came right after the success of Off the Wall.. I think its the entire era thing. People knew MJ. He was a genius. People accepted that. People cant wait to lap more of it. Be part of the entire MJ phenomenon. But say, he released Thriller prior to Off the Wall.. I don't think he would be as successful as he is today. Most people don't study a musical album.. and appreciate it's intricacies.. most people just listen and judge. They like it or not. Thriller is like this experimental success.. people like that.

Bad vs. Thriller. Very different albums dude. Hard to compare both are great on their own. Anybody who released either would be saluted for sure.

On vocals alone.. I feel the same thing. MJ has loads of range. I see that in Bad.. but you wanna build the sizzle and pop and lead to a climatic boom. Not go boom boom boom everywhere... then you lose the whole idea of an album.

BAD was no where near as good as Thriller. Michael really had nowhere to go after the mega success of Thriller and was trying to move his career to movies. Probably the best song on the Bad Album was Liberian Girl...which really got no airplay back in the 80's.

To me the entire Bad album is excellent it shows a wide variety of Michael talents.
Thriller is a excellent album especially these songs BILLIE JEAN, BEAT IT and of course no song until now beats THRILLER
I love both albums but if I had to make a choice between the two I would choose THRILLER

Bad comes in second place to Thriller. Thriller is the best selling album of ALL TIME. It will never be touched for generations and generations to come. On the other hand, both albums are good in their own way. Bad has a rock n' roll type of feel to it while Thriller, i want to say has a darker theme what with the Thriller video for instance.

A REALLY LOVE THRILLER

BUT TO ME

IS SO BETTER

BAD

SEXY IN TEH VIDEO!!!

i disagree with that Thriller can never be touched! PERIOD! The Proof is in the pudding duh people. lol

MJ said that nobody will ever say "bad is better than Thriller" but I'll say it proudly now....I think Bad is way better than Thriller.

It's hard to choose... !!! mmm... maybe Thriller is more danceable!! Laughing out loud

BAD, for the same reason of what the Rolling Stone mag said!!! lol at least 5 songs from bad are in my top 10

Actually,I can't decide..but if i need to pick one..this is Bad,because this is one of my favorite song and so on.This summer I've sing this song on and on.And on this album is smooth criminal, another fave song of mine.

In my opinion, the better album is....Bad. I know that Thriller got more money and better ratings, but to be honest I think the songs on Bad are better....

I like them both ...i really do!My favorite song is Human nature from the Thriller album but i also like so much the rest of the songs.....Wanna Be Startin' Somethin ,Billie Jean ,The way you make me fell,Dirty Diana,Liberian girl,I just can't stop loving you.......all of them.I can't say if Bad is a better record or not.

NOT COOL. BABY BE MINE/PYT ARE AWESOME TRACKS.

BUT EVEN THOUGH THRILLER IS NO. ONE..and im telling myself i like it better..in the end you just cant get past the tight leather of the bad era. haha. and SMOOTH CRIMINAL. have you seen that done liveee??!! its insanee! so BAD. YES BAD!!

WELL, I THINK OBVIOUSLY WHO WROTE THE ARTICLE IS NOT FAN OF MICHAEL JACKSON, JUST MAYBE BE OBJECTIVE: BAD IS DUE TO THRILLER BECAUSE MJ ALWAYS SURPRISED US.
MICHAEL WAS ALWAYS MORE THAN WHAT WE IMAGINED, HE IS A GENIUS AND GREAT ENTERTAINER.
THRILLER IS AND WILL BE THE MOST IMPORTANT ALBUM, "IS THE WORLD´S BIGGEST SELLING ALBUM OF ALL TIME"

I have both Thriller and Bad and i love them both

I think that "Bad" is better (I think that "Bad" is the best album of all time !!!) !!
And I say that because I think that "Bad" is have more hits than "Thriller".
["Bad" : 1. "Bad"
2. "The way you make me feel"
3. "Man in the mirror"
4. "I just cant stop loving you"
5. "Dirty Diana"
6. "Smooth criminal"
7. "Leave me alone" (Of course I want to put and "Speed demon", "Liberian Girl", "Just good friends", "Another part of me")].
("Thriller" : 1. " Wanna be startin' somethin'"
2. "Billie Jean"
3. "Beat it"
4. "Thriller"
5. "Human nature").

Thriller is my absolute favorite album of all time. I can listen to it anytime anywhere all the way through without skipping. PYT is upbeat and danceable and Lady in my Life is a very romantic ballad. Bad is full of great songs--Smooth Criminal is my favorite MJ video--but I understand what JohnC is saying. You can tell it was made in the 80's whereas Thriller could have been written and recorded in any decade based upon its sound. Still, I love Bad, Dirty Diana, etc.

i like bad better!!
i like more songs in that album then i doo Thriller.

i was wondering which is my favorite, the fact is that bad has more songs but thriller has this warm feeling,he has excellent dancing songs and ballads.I prefere thriller and then goes bad.And what baby be mine pyt and lady in my life are way better from dirty diana, liberian girl and speed demon

I love both but umm, excuse me ? P.Y.T. forgettable ? what ? or Baby Be Mine ? ouchh, I have to disagree. Rudeness !

I personally love both albums, but I have to disagree with the reporter saying songs like P.Y.T. and Lady in My Life are forgetable fillers.. I actually LOVE Lady in My Life!!

but I like both

I prefer BAd because the songs really touch me

Bad was a good album, But "Thriller" is my favorite MJ album. It is also my third favorite album of all time, next to Marvin Gaye`s "What`s Going On" and Stevie Wonder`s "Talking Book".

Honestly, I can't listen to Thriller all the time anytime. But I can listen to Bad everyday. Liberian Girl, Another Part of me, I just Can't stop Loving You, Bad, Leave Me Alone, etc. I never got tired of those songs. But I have to disagree about PYT being unforgettable on Thriller. PYT and Lady in My Life are like my favorites from Thriller.

both albums have very good songs!!! I can hardly commit myself there....
maybe i can say i love them both? Eye-wink

People must remember that Rolling Stone magazine is written by people who also have their own favourite musical tastes... no matter how hard anyone tries, people can be unintentionally biased towards anything when it comes to music.

Just like Rolling Stone says PYT is a filler... to me thats complete garbage. PYT is an awesome track.

Though I do like Bad more than Thriller... I would just like to say that people should make their own minds up, rather than an editor who publishes their own personal thoughts.

I ACTUALLY LOVE THEM BOTH,.,

BUT I MOST LOVE IN THRILLER IS BILLIE JEAN, BEAT IT AND THRILLER

IN BAD ALMOST EVERYTHING,,.,.

IF U'LL GONNA ASK ME WHAT'S THE BEST I' LL ANSWER YOU BAD
