As I was blown away from the previous night I couldn't resist coming back for seconds, when Michael is concerned. The concert production itself was something to behold and Michael forced us to be eaten from the palm of his hands the moment he ascended up onto that stage with that spine-tingling music prelude.
As it was the first leg of the world tour, Michael wore a similar outfit to Japan but the top was shiny silvery white instead of red. Naturally, he capped it off with the strip across his chest and in a pair buckle laden trousers. If that's not a turn on, then I don't know what is.
Appropriately, it commenced with Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' and the whole crowd were entranced and went abslolutely bonkers! Michael covered every facet of his career including a Jackson 5 medley, as well as throwing in a few Jacksons tracks including Lovely One, Heartbreak Hotel and Shake Your Body Down To The Ground. No concert would be complete with all of his solo material covering Off The Wall and Thriller including Rock With You where Michael held a high falsetto note at the very end, a hypnotising and soothing rendition of Human Nature and a pretty charged up dance-laden extravanganza for Thriller. Naturally, with every performance, Billie Jean no doubt brought the house down.
Given that it was the first leg, Michael only performed two tracks from Bad:- the title track as well as I Just Can't Stop Loving You with a bleach-blonde unknown Sheryl Crow, who has since carved up a successful music career in her own right. The Way You Make Me Feel was only just released as a single as it wasn't included on the song set at the time unti the second leg.
I really enjoyed that concert and that particular tour as it was Michael's first official solo world tour. The ambience was just right and the staging and logistics were down pat at the time.
Now that I would walk past Parramatta Stadium as well as the SCG, it conjures up the most wonderful and exciting memories of the tour and Michael having set foot in it, yet it overwhelms me to tears thinking otherwise upon reflection and retrospect. I just have to sigh upon looking at the stadium knowing that I'd be reduced to tears.
Australia loves you Michael as much as you did seems as you had a wonderful affinity with this great country. God bless you Michael. Long live the King!
