The singer Karen Carpenter the song was written about her she and Tom ( her ex boyfriend) had broken up and telling of his pain he wrote the song about her. And gave the song to Quiney Jones who thought MJ would do a great job with the song. and he did. the rest is history

Apparently when they recorded that song in the studio, Michael couldn't stop crying at the end, and every time they rehearsed it, he cried every time, so eventually they just put that in the track. I think that's awesome that Michael is that vulnerable.

It was written by Tom Bahler; Michael also had a related story with this song as he explained it on his book "Moonwalk". He always hoped to marry Diana Rose until she told him she was going to get married somebody else. Between singing this song he said, he was emotional about it and that's why we hear him "cry" at the end of the song which made it sound more colorful and real.
