Dearest Michael,

Last week I made a pilgrimage to your birthplace, Gary, Indiana. I stood inside your family’s modest three-bedroom home on 2300 Jackson Street. I felt the magic. It started there, nine kids plus your parents, jam packed, livin’ on top of each other pursuing The American Dream. For this alone 2300 Jackson should be declared a National Landmark. One has to go back to the beginning to clearly see the entire journey. Gary, Steel town, Midwest, blue collar, hard workin’, hard livin’, great work ethic and simple basic values. It’s there early where you learned ‘you had to sing and dance like your life depended on it’ which it did. You and your family made the dream a reality. But as we all finally learn (sooner or later) dreams have costs and costs have consequences. I truly cherish the short time we worked together, visiting my home in Brooklyn, huggin’ and kissin’ my newborn daughter Satchel, as if she was your own daughter, our fantastic journey to Brazil to shoot the video for ‘THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT US.’ I regret never getting to inform you that our video was directly responsible for the great film CITY OF GOD being conceived and made. Michael, your life touched people the world over you will never know. Michael, I’m one year older than you, we grew up together. I had my Afro just like you. I wanted to be like you. Wanted the cute girls to fawn over me the way they did you (the girls were not going for it. They’d rather make goo-goo eyes at your pictures plastered all over their bedroom.) At that young age I had no notion of what I wanted to do in my life. You made me see the possibilities even though I could not sing or dance a lick despite coming from a musical family. You, Jermaine, Tito, Jackie and Marlon showed us the way. You guys were young Black boys like us. Upon us was a new day, a new world and it’s on us to make the most of it. In closing Michael, you checked out of here way, way too soon but while you walked this earth in your physical form you changed it. You changed the World, changed the Game forever.

May you rest eternally in Peace.

Love,

Spike Lee

P.S. Brooklyn luvs ya!

LOVE U DA MOST MJ...

Dear Mr. Lee,

I couldn't think of a better filmmaker to create that eulogy-on -film the "This Is It" short video. It was beautiful and captured the essence of Michael's humble beginnings and early childhood. Your letter was heartfelt and personal, and it is touching of you to share it with the world. Thank you for humbling yourself to show what an impact Michael had not just on regular fans, but on all people. Thank you for collaborating on the two stunning videos for "They Don't Care About Us." Thank you for publicly standing up to support Michael when he was embattled, not just when it was fashionable. Most of all, thank you for being a friend to him. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Planet Jackson

Dear Mr. Lee,

What a beautiful tribute to a beautiful man! Yes, Michael was - and still is - magic, and he paved the way to show others that they, too, could reach the pinnacle of success through creativity, imagination, hard work, effort, belief in one's self and faith. What Michael and his family did was virtually improbable; but not impossible as they so aptly demonstrated. No wonder Michael liked Peter Pan so much! He must have thought that Tinkerbell had sprinkled him with pixie dust as he went through his life; but the magic was in Michael.

There's a part in the Special Features section of TII where Michael Bearden speaks about a conversation he had with Michael regarding what their name meant. I found the story beautiful because, what I came away with, was that Michael told Michael Bearden that they should be humble as they received and used their gifts from God, and that their job was to show others that they, too, have gifts and talents to be used to help make this world a better place.

Something you, yourself, have done Mr. Lee with your many inspiring movies and music videos. And to find that the making of "They Don't Really Care About Us" was directly responsible for the creation of the film "City of God" would have made Michael proud. That was a fantastic movie and the fact that Michael's legacy is spreading through all kinds of creative medium is a testament to the wonderful work Michael did, and the beauty and wonder he helped to create in the world in addition to his efforts to wake the world up to the not so beautiful aspects of our planet.
